We will be using 20 sided dice. Also known as 1d20. Basic explanations with stats:

a 10 roll adds 0 to your stat

lower than 10 subtracts the difference

higher than 10 adds the difference

a roll of 14 adds +4 to your stat

a roll of 6 subtracts -4 to your stat

all athletes have days off right?
